At today's Oilers practice, Jake Walman and Trent Frederic reportedly got into a brief altercation.

The Oilers had a news-heavy practice day, even aside from this event. Zach Hyman and Mattias Janmark will be nearing their returns to the lineup, and there will be slight tweaks for tomorrow's game.

2 Oilers players get into brief altercation on the ice at practice

According to Oilers reporter Jason Gregor, Jake Walman and Trent Frederic started chirping each other after going a physical play, bringing some animosity to the practice.
A small altercation at practice isn't unusual for the NHL, but it often comes at a time of frustration for the team. After losing their last 2 games and beginning the year with a mediocre record, events like this can be a wake up call for the locker room.
It's especially interesting to see Trent Frederic get involved in this, as he's been called out numerous times for a disappointing start this season. In 15 games, has just 1 goal and 0 assists.
This altercation at practice also harkens back to some comments from Connor McDavid recently, calling their play «emotionless» at times. This is one of the ways athletes engage with each other to raise their game - to bring that needed emotion.
We'll see if this becomes a turning point for the Oilers locker room to kick their play into high gear, and especially a wake up call for Frederic.
The Oilers clearly haven't come close to their full potential yet, and now it looks like the players on the team want to see more too.
