Oilers GM Stan Bowman was directly asked about the chance of McDavid leaving Edmonton in free agency, and shut down the idea entirely.
McDavid made waves as the Oilers began Captain's Skates by directly stating that «no term» was a possibility on his next contract. Despite the words straight from McDavid, Bowman doesn't believe it's a threat.

Being interviewed on TSN Radio, Stan Bowman was directly confronted with the chance that McDavid could leave, and asked about what the team's plan would be.
HAYES: If it got to a point where he decided he wanted to leave Edmonton, would you expect him to give you guys a heads up on that decision?
BOWMAN: I don't like talking about hypotheticals. I get the question, but I don't think there's value. There's a million different 'what ifs' that people could throw our way. I think that's not really a productive discussion. I love having him on our team here, I know he's dedicated. Just to quote what he said, there's nothing he wants more than to win the Cup in Edmonton. I think that's what we're all focused on right now, heading into next week and looking forward to seeing camp start up.

Although McDavid did mention leaving was a possibility, he's also more dialled in than ever to win a Stanley Cup with the current group in Edmonton.
The hold-up surrounding his contract could be surrounding his salary with the rising cap or due to evaluating the future of the team. Whatever it is, the Oilers will try to make their best case to McDavid to convince him to stay for as long as possible.
Whenever McDavid is ready to re-sign with the Oilers, Bowman will be waiting with a blank cheque to offer the captain.
