Warren Foegele's goal against the Edmonton Oilers last night was a classic case of borderline goalie interference, but the Edmonton Oilers refused to challenge - which now appeared to be the right call.

With the puck wedged into the toe of Pickard's pad in the blue paint, Foegele used his stick to spear the pad and move the Oilers goalie to score an easy goal.

NHL insider reveals Oilers reached out to league for Foegele goal

On today's edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman said that he believes the goal would've been overturned - and also that the Oilers would reach out for a definitive answer.
Noah Siegel, who does the challenges for the Oilers, he's really on top of his game. I have no doubt that on the off-day, he's going to reach out to [the NHL] and say, hey, if I challenged this, what would the result have been?

- Elliotte Friedman

Friedman also added that he and other Sportsnet analysts believed that there was grounds for a challenge, based on the distinction that Foegele speared the pad. However, that doesn't seem to be correct.

Oilers coach hints NHL would have allowed Foegele goal if challenged

When speaking to the media today, Coach Knoblauch hinted that the Oilers staff believed the NHL would've allowed the goal.
Given the fact the Oilers also followed up with their video staff, it's likely that was the NHL's official verdict - it was a good goal.
We didn't consider it for very long. It would've been different if there was separation between the puck and the pad, if he pushes the pad, and then the puck, that would be goalie interference.

But that puck was pretty much lodged in the pad. The player has free will to push that puck and make a play on that puck. Confident that if we did challenge, it would be a failed challenge.

- Kris Knoblauch
The Oilers made the right decision then, as they were able to avoid a penalty for a failed challenge and ended up scoring shortly afterward anyway. At the very least, it's a move that seemed to appease the hockey gods.
