According to reports, Oilers' GM Stan Bowman may be looking to trade for one of two goalies about whom he'd already made inquiries.
Oilers' goalie-dilemma running short on solutions
On a recent edition of OilersNOW, TSN's Ryan Rishaug joined Bob Staffer and talked about how the Oilers would not hesitate to trade for a goaltender, if the right deal presented itself.
Stuart Skinner, it's done, it's done, no question...I don't think there would be a second's hesitation to do the deal if he knew he could improve that position tomorrow. Why would he hesitate?
The more pertinent question might be, why is he hesitating now?
The answer could be that a quality starting netminder isn't available. Yet, one never is, until it is. Stan Bowman needs to make it happen with the right deal and package. He may need to sweeten the pot, but a trade has to happen.
Will it be with the Bruins? The team is 11-7-0 in the Atlantic Division, tied for first place with 18 points, and goalie
Jeremy Swayman is playing well, with a record of 7-4, and a .910 SV%.
Boston may not want to trade him just yet. Their back-up
Joonas Korpisalo is the more likely candidate, but the Oilers don't need a below-average goalie.
Detroit, on the other hand, has a record of 9-7-0, 4-points out of first, but also 4-points out of last in the Atlantic. They could be persuaded into a trade, maybe.
Their veteran goalie
John Gibson is probably considered Detroit's back-up, and in his nine starts this year, has a record of 4-5-0, with a 3.15 GAA and .882 SV%. But he is a proven winner and can hold-down the goal for a contender.
Gibson is the more likely target for Edmonton. With a career GAA of 2.89 and SV% of .910, he is more than capable.
Whether Stan Bowman believes so is another matter altogether.
