First fight of season leads to Oilers' victory on the ice
Trent Frederic has been the source of considerable criticism of late for his ineffectual play and lack of physicality, for which the forward was brought-in from Boston two years ago.
Finally, only 2-minutes into yesterday's contest against Columbus, Trent dropped his gloves, took a licking, and sparked McDavid and Oilers to a much-needed win.
Before last night, Edmonton was the only NHL club without a fight on record. It's been an area of concern this year, not for the lack of fighting necessarily, but for the lack of player involvement in games, physically speaking.
We saw how important intensity can be; how it can turn the team's energy around with only a few punches. In fact, whenever the Oilers fight, they win more games than they lose; quite a bit more, in fact, with a record of 10-3.
It gets our group going. A lot a credit to him [Frederic], honestly. You always got to be talking...When it goes silent, that's when you're in trouble. Gotta keep talking. We did that tonight and found a way to win.
- Connor McDavid
It may have just been one fight, and one win, but it's a good start. The team will be embarking on a 7-game road trip beginning tomorrow night against the Flyers, with a pretty good idea of how to play the game for a better chance to win.
Just copy the game-plan used versus Columbus. The Oilers now have some momentum on their side.
