Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry has had an incredible season, but now at 40 years old, he may be in the final season of his career if everything goes right.
NHL insider expects Corey Perry to retire if Edmonton Oilers win the Stanley Cup
According to NHL insider Jeff Marek, it wouldn't be out of the question for Corey Perry to retire if the Edmonton Oilers win the Stanley Cup this season.
From what Perry has shown in his age 40 season, he absolutely deserves another NHL contract next season. However, it'd be hard to argue that going out with a Stanley Cup would be worse than returning for one more year with no guarantees.
In 81 games this season, Perry scored a very impressive 19 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, he's even elevated his game to score 5 goals and 7 points in 11 games, even taking playoff time over
Zach Hyman.
Perry has proven that he has the talent, the smarts, and every ability to return for another NHL season. He absolutely will return for another year, but the only thing that could stop him is a Stanley Cup.
Perry is bringing so much to the Oilers even in limited minutes - but he's been so good that he often earns upwards of 15 minutes at least. His gritty and skilled play around the net makes him an asset next to McDavid at all times, and he's adapted his play for success even as he ages.
However, if the Oilers win the Stanley Cup this season, it wouldn't be a perfect bookend to his career. Finally, after years of the Corey Perry curse losing in the finals, retiring on a high is the dream.
