The Edmonton Oilers have begun this season trying Trent Frederic on the top line, but there might be reason to make a change soon.
With
Zach Hyman on LTIR to begin the season, the Oilers have loaded up the top line with McDavid and Draisaitl, looking for Frederic to replicate Hyman's role. Unfortunately, he hasn't worked out perfectly.
Edmonton Oilers primed to make a change with top line position
So far, Trent Frederic has struggled to find a way to make a positive impact on the top line. Too often plays have died on his stick, he's lost physical battles to larger defenders, and overall hasn't fulfilled expectations.
Some fans aren't too happy with the early returns on Frederic, which may be a concern 1 year into an 8 year contract.
While Frederic has been struggling on the first line, one other newcomer has had some great looks alongside
Leon Draisaitl and
Connor McDavid.
David Tomasek has been given the top unit powerplay role to start the year, and he's had some quality chances and displayed his complimentary skill. Some fans want to see Tomasek promoted to the top line.
The 29 year old NHL rookie has impressed since training camp, and looks to be adjusting well to the North American game.
He's had a number of dangerous shots, is always in position, and has made some smart set-up plays. On the powerplay he looks like a great fit with McDavid and Draisaitl, and he could be at even strength too.
We'll see if the Oilers give Frederic a few more games to make an impact on the top line, or they'll make the situation to swap in Tomasek or another.
