The Edmonton Oilers lost their third straight game today to the Detroit Red Wings, and Leon Draisaitl was one to point out the offensive problems for the team early this year.
Leon Draisaitl calls out Oilers early season offence problems after loss to Detroit Red Wings
Speaking to the media after the game, Leon Driasaitl was the first to admit that he himself needs to be better at generating offence - and so does the rest of their «top guys.»
Draisaitl may be referencing one tough play for himself, where he fumbled a puck on a near-breakaway that could have changed the trajectory of the game. But those comments ring true for more players too.
It seems that far too often right now, the Oilers are overpassing, hesitant to make an offensive play, and are remaining on the perimeter of the ice.
Some fans have attributed this to Coach Knoblauch, and it may be a systems adjustment, but the Oilers bench boss also isn't liking the constantly «safe» plays from his lineup right now. That could be a message to McDavid, who has passed off too many quality scoring chances.
I think a lot of this is just the way they feel, having the confidence, executing passes, moving it up together nicely.
A lot of missed passes, execution not being there, and then just ends up being the safe play and get in on the forecheck, instead of a series of passes to get in the zone.
- Coach Knoblauch
The Oilers need to find their confidence and get back to dictating their style of play over their opponents. The skill on the roster is there, but it appears they may be in for another slow start to the season.
