The Edmonton Oilers are still in the trade market to acquire a top end defenceman this season, and it's possible that it may push out young defenceman Ty Emberson.
Ty Emberson could be odd man out of contract dispute, another addition comes into play
After the addition of
John Klingberg at a prorated salary of $1.7M and his decent play so far, it doesn't seem like he would be the defenceman to be scratched in the playoffs. Oilers insider Jason Gregor believes Emberson would be the scratch.
If Emberson would be the odd man out, and still can't come to a contract extension agreement by the trade deadline, it's possible the Oilers could dangle him as a trade asset.
His stock has certainly increased since this season, and rebuilding teams would be interested in a young defender that can enter the lineup immediately. Unfortunately, it may sting to give up a player like that for a rental defenceman.
If Emberson's used as a piece to acquire a new top 4 defender, the whole trade would essentially be Ceci and draft pick for an upgrade on defence.
Hopefully the Oilers can find a good solution moving forward to solidify their defence for this year's playoffs, and also keeping in mind future playoff runs coming.
