The Edmonton Oilers had a bit of an odd saga this season with the waiver claim of Alec Regula, but the organization will be keeping him around on a 2 year contract.
Edmonton Oilers re-sign Alec Regula to 2 year contract
Although he wasn't able to play this season, the Oilers still made the smart move to keep the asset on a very low risk contract. Not only that, but experts believe him to be a promising player.
Regula is a 24 year old, 6'4, right shot defenceman, giving him the physical tools to be an NHL asset right away.
»According to the team source, Regula's patience and poise with the puck and ability to pass it are the attributes that intrigue them. The fact that he shoots right is a bonus.»
-Daniel Nugent-Bowman, the Athletic
A big young mobile defender who can pass the puck is a worthy bet for any team, and the Oilers were lucky to pick him up and get him in the organization. In the 2022-23 season in the AHL, Regula scored 26 points in 55 games with a +36 rating.
Regula doesn't have to turn into a key impact player, because at 2 years and $775K each year, the Oilers have a solid depth option with potential on a cheap contract. Hopefully, they don't lose him again on waivers next year.
