Former Stanley Cup champion Mike Rupp had some advice for Oilers Trent Frederic on his appearance on Sports 1440

Frederic lacks physicality and presence on the ice

Trent Frederic was acquired in a three-team deal with the Boston Bruins and the New Jersey Devils just before last year's trade deadline, and shortly after signed an 8-year contract at a cap hit of $3.85M.
So far, he's failed to deliver on his deal, both in terms of offense (1 point in 15GP) and physicality, a role he was expected to bring to his new club.
Frederic arrived from Boston with a high-ankle sprain that seems to have not entirely healed, limiting his mobility and his ability to be aggressive, a role at which he typically excels; usually, he has a nose for the net and a willingness to get involved physically.
To be effective for the Edmonton Oilers, Trent Frederic must utilize his physicality, kill penalties, and generate complementary offense, particularly on the third line. Again, he's failed to do that.
The Oilers acquired him for his size and tough-nosed playing style. He played on the top line early in the 2025-2026 season due to injuries, but was moved back down the lineup after struggling to keep up with the top talent.
Frederic needs to use his size to forecheck effectively and disrupt opponents. His hitting can wear players down and add an element of toughness the team is currently lacking, especially without Evander Kane in the lineup.
Trent's effectiveness comes from setting a physical tone, winning battles in the corners, playing a strong defensive game, and providing a gritty presence, creating space for the star players.
When you provide players like McDavid and Draisaitl space and time, more often than not they will convert. With this Oilers' team lacking intensity, the stars have had to play more minutes. Their record reflects the inconsistencies in their game.
