The Vegas Golden Knights have long been criticized by NHL fans for pushing the limits of league rules, and now they could finally face a punishment for tampering charges with Mitch Marner.

Vegas has used LTIR to ice playoff rosters far over the salary cap several times, which has drawn major criticism from fans - but nothing from the NHL. The Oilers were investigated for their use of LTIR with Evander Kane, but will not be punished.

Vegas Golden Knights may face NHL investigation as result of Mitch Marner rumours

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on today's edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Maple Leafs may be threatening to file an investigation for tampering with Mitch Marner as leverage to get a sign-and-trade.
There has been some talk that, if Marner goes to Vegas, the Maple Leafs will go after Vegas for tampering.

I have no proof that Vegas is guilty of anything, but it's a time around the league where teams are extremely sensitive about it, and as a couple of GMs told me on Saturday, they think the NHL is itching to try and make an example out of someone.

But if they make a deal with Toronto, and send a good player to Toronto, I'm betting any chance the Maple Leafs file for tampering goes away.

It's shocking to hear that the NHL may finally actually punish Vegas after seemingly allowing them to get away with Cap infringements for years - but tampering with a star player on a Canadian team brings significant attention.
Also, this entire situation looks like a shrewd move by Leafs GM Brad Treliving. About to lose Marner for nothing, he could use some significant leverage of NHL punishment to get an asset back - or Vegas could lose out in a more significant way.
This will be an interesting situation to follow in the next 48 hours as free agency opens. If Marner signs outright with Vegas, a massive NHL investigation could follow suit.
