The New York Islanders officially selected Matthew Shaefer first overall in the NHL Draft, and this year's top pick seems like truly a great kid - who also had a hilarious moment with Connor McDavid.
The Islanders selected the 17 year old left shot defenceman from Stony Creek Ontario after playing just 17 games with the Barrie Colts last season. He's an incredibly talented defender, and a great person who's preserved through the personal tragedy of losing his mother.
Matthew Schaefer has hilariously awkward moment with Connor McDavid
It was an emotional scene for Schaefer to officially be selected first overall, but he had been touring the NHL a bit in the months prior being touted as the top pick.
During the Stanley Cup Final, Schaefer got the chance to meet with Connor McDavid - and the young top prospect was entirely starstruck.
They were so dialled in, but he came and talked to me. I was like, 'It's pretty cool McDavid's coming up to you.
I ended up talking to him, and I remember I ran out of things to say, and I ended up looking at McDavid and going, 'I'm proud of you'.
Nobody would say that. I mean, I'm a young kid, and I'm saying that to him. So I tell everyone that story, everyone's laughing, and I'm like, what am I doing?
It's amazing to see the reverence these young prospects now have for Connor McDavid entering the league. The Oilers superstar has truly reached the echelon of a living hockey legend, and an icon to the younger half of the league - just like Sidney Crosby is.
Way back in the day, Connor McDavid himself had a similar moment with Sidney Crosby, by referring to him as Mr. Crosby.
As a first overall pick, a player carries expectations of being an elite player. Based on what hockey fans have seen of Schaefer so far this weekend at the draft, they'll also know he's a great person, and easy to root for.
