Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman spoke to reporters after the conclusion of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft and reveal the game plan for where the Oilers stand in terms of goaltending.

Several reporters questioned whether the Oilers have a need or an urgency to upgrade their goalies, but Bowman feels he needs more time good to evaluate.

Bowman continuing to look over goalies and talking to league managers

As expected, Bowman's answers were not what many had hoped. He explained but he needs time to evaluate the goalie position on is out there currently and who is out there while speaking to his many general managers as possible potentially more than once.
The goalie market is razor thin in the unrestricted free agency and in the trading market and it appeared that Bowman had no interest in bringing in John Gibson who was rumored to go to the Oilers prior to the NHL trade deadline.
News broke earlier today that the Anaheim Ducks had traded Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goaltender Petr Mrazek and two draft picks.
Many fans took to X and voiced that the Oilers could have acquired Gibson for that kind of return easily as both draft picks were not for the 2025 entry draft.
Both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard had drawn much scrutiny after both goaltenders failed to deliver another Stanley Cup for the Oilers as their performances did not help the team especially in the later games of the series which led the Oilers to lose in six.

Bowman spoke about Bouchard and McDavid contract negotiations

During the same press conference, reporters asked what the status was of restricted free agent Evan Bouchard an Oilers superstar Connor McDavid's contract negotiations.
Bowman had confirmed that Bouchard and management have begun negotiations to find the right deal to keep the 25-year-old defender who has had several good seasons. He currently is asking for a contract worth $10 million per season and likely a long-term deal of eight years.
As for McDavid, Bowman eluded to early discussions with his camp and Oilers management on how the team will move forward and what improvements they will do to help make the team a Stanley Cup winner.
Bowman explained that no contract negotiations direct have begun and that both parties are trying to understand how the team will move forward then discuss numbers.
It will be a fascinating summer for the Oilers and the fanbase and it remains to be seen on how the team will handle all these major ticket items and keep the team competitive and try to make it to third Stanley Cup finals in a row.
