Oilers reportedly asking two veteran players to waive no-trade clauses
The Edmonton Oilers may have reached the Stanley Cup Final two years in a row, but now major changes will be happening this offseason to get the team over the hump.
As a reality of the salary cap system, the Oilers will be looking to change out a significant portion of their bottom six - but they could also move two top 6 players in
Evander Kane and
Viktor Arvidsson.
Evander Kane and Viktor Arvidsson named as likely to hit trade block this offseason
According to a new report from NHL insider David Pagnotta, both Kane and Arvidsson could hit the trade market this offseason. Both players have trade protection - Kane has a 16 team no-trade list, and Arvidsson a full no-move clause.
Evander Kane came back from injury and surprisingly was a quality contributor in the early rounds, but in Stanley Cup Final was taking too many dumb penalties to be effective at all. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that there is legitimate trade interest for Kane, so the Oilers could actually get an asset back.
They explored the market for him at the deadline, and just because he wasn't healthy, there wasn't much to go on there. Kane was a really effective player until the penalties in the series. I think there will be a market for him.

Viktor Arvidsson found himself as a healthy scratch in the final game of the year - clearly just not a fit on the roster. He still scored 27 points in 67 games this season, so he should be a tradeable asset.
Along with Kane and Arvidsson, there's plenty of Oilers players who may not be returning.
John Klingberg and
Jeff Skinner are likely to walk as free agents, and
Connor Brown could command a significant raise.
Hopefully the Oilers are able to move off these two inefficient contracts, free up the $9M of cap space, and are able to spread that money out with quality new additions.
