The Edmonton Oilers' biggest organizational priority this offseason will be re-signing Connor McDavid to a contract extension before he hits free agency next summer.
Oilers insider believes McDavid will sign short term contract late this summer
According to new reports from TSN insider Ryan Rishaug, the Oilers may wait until much later this offseason to finalize a deal for Connor McDavid.
Based on Rishaug's report and Stan Bowman's earlier comments, it's clear the Oilers are ready to talk, but aren't going to rush him into it.
We're very eager to do that whenever they're ready. I think Connor has earned the right to choose when he wants to get into the details of it, and we're ready right now, he knows that.
He's right that July 1 is a date when we can officially sign him to a contract, but besides that, it's just another date and it doesn't really change the process at all.
- Stan Bowman
There's nothing really to negotiate when it comes to the Connor McDavid contract anyway. Whatever salary and term he asks for, the Edmonton Oilers will gladly accept to get the best player in the world back on the roster.
Judging reports from top Oilers insiders, McDavid is practically certain to sign in Edmonton on a shorter term contract, but again with a salary discount.
McDavid could rightfully command a max contract with the rapidly rising salary cap, but it's more likely he takes a small salary discount to help the team - and he'll still be the highest paid player in the NHL.
