The Edmonton Oilers already have a bit of a logjam at the forward position, but one NHL insider is reporting the team may looking at another high-end addition.

The Oilers currently have a surplus of bottom six wingers, which could lead to a trade of Mattias Janmark before the start of training camp. They're also relying on rookies Ike Howard, Matthew Savoie, and David Tomasek to take key roles next year.

Edmonton Oilers reportedly interested in adding another top six forward

According to a new update from NHL insider David Pagnotta on the Hello Hockey Podcast, the Edmonton Oilers are looking for another top 6 forward in the trade market. They were not one of the teams interested in trading for Dakota Joshua, as their see their bottom-six full for now.
«They're still looking for a top six guy. So we'll see kind of where this all comes together. But, you know, clearly they didn't feel like Joshua was going to be somebody that was going to slot into their top six consistently.

One team the Oilers have been linked to in the past is the Pittsburgh Penguins, one of the few teams expected to be ready to sell pieces before the season. Some top-six options on Pittsburgh would include Bryan Rust and Ryan Rakell.
A top 6 forward may be a target by the trade deadline, but the Oilers would likely be ready to enter the season with their current lineup for forwards.
The team has made commitments to Howard, Savoie, and Tomasek, and they should spend some time to see how those players fare and develop over the course of a few months. If they find themselves falling down the lineup, then a trade for a top 6 forward would make sense.
Hopefully the Oilers can keep some resources to address their real biggest roster weakness in net. Allocating even more dollars to the forward group with no investment in goaltending has proven to be a losing strategy - but maybe they'll make a change.
