Marc-Andre Fleury's agent has hinted towards major news incoming for the veteran goaltender - and now he's signed a special PTO.
Fleury is expected to play one final preseason game with the Penguins before formally retiring. He'll get to go out with his longtime team in Pittsburgh, still featuring friends like Crosby, Malkin, and Letang.
Earlier this offseason, reports surfaced that the
Oilers were in discussion with Fleury, even though the 40 year goalie has announced his retirement. With training camps approaching, the time to make his final decision is now, and it looks like he's retiring.
Marc-Andre Fleury making NHL comeback for one game before retirement
Taking to social media, Fleury's agent Allan Walsh made two statements indicating a «buzz» around the goaltender.
With 1051 career NHL games played, Fleury is one of the greatest goalies of his generation. A three time Stanley Cup Champion and Vezina winner, Fleury posted an incredible .912 save percentage over his career with the Penguins, Golden Knights, and Wild.
Now, his return to Pittsburgh has been made official.
Fleury did tail off in the final two years of his career, falling below a .900 save percentage for the first time since his second season. Considering his full-fledged retirement tour and fall off in play, a real comeback still seems fairly unlikely.
The goalie has made his decision final to step away from the game, but still, that hasn't stopped fans from clamouring for a comeback.
Perhaps the Oilers should've acquired Fleury in the twilight of his career, but it was still a risky move. The fact that they'd expressed interest in him earlier this season still suggests they're looking for an upgrade at goalie.
