The Los Angeles Kings have confirmed that Corey Perry suffered a major injury at practice, and will be unavailable for up to 8 weeks.
While this is still brutal news for Perry personally, it's a positive that he will be able to return this season. A more severe injury could've kept him out all year, and at 40 years old, it may be his final season. It's great that he will return this year.
Corey Perry out for 6-8 weeks after leaving Kings practice in wheelchair
Reports surfaced yesterday that Perry had an unknown incident at practice that led to him being taken out of the rink in a wheelchair, which did cause worry for the worst case scenario.
Instead, Perry has already undergone knee surgery and is expected to return to play by late November - great news for him and the LA Kings.
In the last two seasons, Perry grew from a heated rival to a fan favourite in Edmonton. The pesky veteran forward was always under the opponent's skin, and had a great offensive year potting 19 goals in mostly fourth-line minutes.
Perry became a great leader in the Oilers locker room, and so close to the Stanley Cup, it was surprising to leave the team in free agency. Unfortunately, the Oilers just couldn't match the $4M bonus-laden contract he got in Los Angeles.
At 40 years old, it's impressive enough that Perry is continuing his career and still an impact player. Nobody wanted to see his year ended by injury, so it's great news to hear he'll be back in November.
