Laurent Brossoit placed on waivers, Oilers may be interested in adding him
According to Blackhawks insiders, Chicago will be placing Brossoit on waivers later this afternoon. They have enough NHL goalies with Knight and Soderblom on their roster now, and have no room for Brossoit returning from injury.
Brossoit has missed last season entirely with injuries, but prior to that had a fantastic run as a talented backup goalie. In his last 34 games dating back to the 2022-23 season, he's posted a .927 save percentage.
He's now being officially activated from his rehab stint in the AHL, where Brossoit played a .900 save percentage in 3 games.
The big concern that will deter most teams from claiming the 32 year old goalie is his $3.3M cap hit for the remainder of this season. However, the Blackhawks have indicated they are open to trading him, and retaining salary.
If the Oilers could get Brossoit at $1.65M with retained salary, he would look to be a sure upgrade in Calvin Pickard and Connor Ingram. Brossoit would have to clear waivers first, which would open the door to trades.
Brossoit broke into the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, playing 28 games with the team from 2015 to 2018. He's now racked up a total of 140 career games.
This will be an interesting situation to watch in the next few days, as other teams interested in Brossoit will also make offers. If he continues his strong play in the AHL as well, teams will take notice.
