In a loss to the Montreal Canadiens last night, the Oilers' bottom-six forwards once again failed to make an impact.
Though the entire bottom-six failed to show up, it was primarily Andrew Mangiapane, Trent Frederic, and Adam Henrique who were noticeably absent from the game.
Role players not performing for Oilers
The Oilers' bottom six forwards have had a rocky and largely disappointing performance so far, struggling to provide consistent secondary scoring and defensive reliability.
What makes the issue even more glaring is their combined annual cap hit of $10.45M, for a total of 22 points on the season.
And it's not just last night's game that has raised the red flags, but their play for the entire season.
Yet, the top-six forward group has stepped it up quite a bit since Edmonton has found its game, and have accounted for the lion's share of the team's production.
At this point, the solution seems obvious. There are several players in Bakersfield whom the Oilers can call for help, notably Quinn Hutson and his 16G and 28 points over 24 games this year.
Also, Ike Howard, playing on line with Hutson, is contributing nicely, with 6G and 13 points in 11 games with the Condors. He is on track with his development.
Finally, the third of the Condors' top-line trio, Josh Samanski is making his presence known, with his strong work ethic and reliable secondary production, 17 points over 24 games.
While the top line of McDavid and Draisaitl continues to produce at elite levels, the lack of consistent secondary scoring from the bottom six means has contributed to the team being unable to string together more than a couple of wins consistently.
It's clear that the Oilers have bottom-six options in the AHL that can help the big club now.
