Mattias Janmark is only entering the second year of his contract with the Oilers, but he may begin the regular season by hitting the waiver wire.

The Edmonton Oilers have added a number of young players and free agents who have impressed through the preseason, and made their case to stay on the NHL roster. On the other hand, Mattias Janmark has been fading.

Oilers insider speculates Mattias Janmark may be placed on waivers this week

According to a new update from Insider Jason Gregor, Mattias Janmark currently looks like the most likely player to be waived - even though he still brings meaningful contributions to the team.
So then there's one other player you need to send down. Every other guy will need to require waivers. So your options are a defenceman: Regula, Stecher, Emberson. Or another forward. Someone people say Mattias Janmark.

He didn't do much in the regular season, but he's a pretty solid performer. Good on the penalty kill, strong on the puck, rarely makes mistakes. So I'm fascinated to see what they do.
The Oilers may not prefer to carry 3 defenceman, but all of Regula, Emberson, and Stecher have shown their value to the team. Curtis Lazar could be waived, but the team just signed him in free agency and likes his positional versatility in the bottom 6. Noah Philp should make the roster after his strong preseason.
Mattias Janmark has been a reliable 4th liner for the Oilers in defensive roles and as a penalty kill specialist, but the Oilers are even trying new players on the PK this year. If Janmark loses that role, his roster spot is hard to justify.
The Oilers signed Janmark to a 3 year contract for $1.45M last offseason knowing he was a defensive specialist, but it's still an overpay for a hustling 4th line winger. He had only 2 goals in 80 games played last year, and the Oilers could simply get more from another player.
It's possible that Janmark hits waivers, and it'll be unlikely another team will claim him with his contract. Hopefully he can stay in the organization at least as injury depth.
