The Edmonton Oilers provided the full details of the trade as follows:
Trade 1: Boston Bruins trade Trent Frederic (50% salary retained) to New Jersey Devils in exchange for unsigned draft choice
Petr Hauser.
Trade 2: New Jersey trades Trent Frederic (50% salary retained) to Edmonton in exchange for unsigned draft choice
Shane Lachance.
Trade 3: Boston trades Max Jones and unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser to Edmonton in exchange for Max Wanner, St. Louis' second-round pick in 2025 (owned by Edmonton) and Edmonton's own fourth-round selection in 2026.
The Oilers will be departing with two quality prospects, Max Wanner and Shane LaChance, in the deal - in addition to sending a second and a fourth round draft pick.
Edmonton Oilers acquiring Trent Frederic in three way trade with Boston Bruins
Trent Frederic is a 27 year old 6'3 centreman that will provide some much needed physicality and depth to the Edmonton Oilers. He's a tough customer, and hopefully can play the role of a younger, faster,
Corey Perry.
Last season Frederic scored career highs of 18 goals and 40 points, but this season has been a down year with only 8 goals and 15 points. Signed at $2.3M, Frederic is a free agent at the end of this season.
Max Jones is a 27 year old forward who has played most of the season in the AHL, but is also a former first round pick of the Anaheim Ducks, and has 265 games of NHL experience. He'll be another capabale depth player on the Oilers wings. Jones makes $1M in salary for just this season.
Oilers won't be done after adding Trent Frederic
The Oilers were able to acquire Frederic with double salary retention, meaning that they'll only be on the hook for the player at a price of $575K.
The team paid a premium for that cap space, so hopefully, they'll have the room to add more players in more trades.
This should be a great deal for the Oilers to provide some positional flexibility in their bottom six, and give them a tougher identity in their bottom six.
They haven't yet addressed their biggest weakness in the goal crease, but Edmonton still has time to make more moves. This one is a blockbuster to start.
