The Flames selected Ilya Nikolaev with the 88th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Nikolaev has spent 4 years in the Calgary Flames system, bouncing between their AHL and ECHL affiliates, the Calgary Wranglers and Rapid City Rush.
In his four years, Nikolaev never got a decent stretch of games on one team, which is brutal for a players development, and often results in a situation like this.
Nikolaev's longest stretch of playing time in the AHL came in 2023-24, where he played 29 games and scored 3 goals and 6 points. In 40 ECHL games in his first season, he scored 13 goals and 33 points.
Flames analyst Ryan Pike explained that Nikolaev was lost in the shuffle of Flames prospects, and simply fizzled out.
The transition from Russia to North America is often difficult, especially on young players. While trying to establish and grow their game, they need to adjust to an entirely new culture.
It's an incredibly difficult process that NHL teams don't help by bouncing a player between leagues, or benching for long periods of time. The Edmonton Oilers have been guilty of these mistakes with young European players too.
Under the new Oilers leadership of Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman, the development of European and Russian prospects is being made a priority.
The Oilers have one interesting prospect themselves currently overseas. 2020 Draft pick Maxim Berezkin is approaching free agency in the KHL, and Stan Bowman is expected to be making a pitch to sign him.
Good NHL team or get the best value from all possible areas, and make real efforts to continually develop their players. The Flames may have lost out on a good talent in Nikolaev because of losing him in the shuffle. Three players drafted in the ten picks after Nikolaev have already played significant NHL games: Aliaksei Protas, Jordan Spence, and Matias Maccelli.
Nikolaev will likely head back to the KHL or another overseas league to try to continue his professional playing career. Best of luck to him in his next endeavour.
