The Edmonton Oilers lost Zach Hyman to a heartbreaking injury in last year's playoffs, and there's a chance he won't even be available for the start of next season.

In Game 4 against the Dallas Stars, Hyman took a hard side-swipe hit from Mason Marchment. Hyman suffered a dislocated wrist, multiple torn ligaments, and required surgery.

Zach Hyman still may be out of commission at the start of next season as he recovers from injury. Most recently, Hyman was still spotted wearing his wrist brace, and revealed that he may not be available for Game 1.
I don't even know what the timeline is, to be honest, but that's definitely not out of the question. I haven't set a date or anything like that. I've dealt with it with the ACL. Once you set a date, you get disappointed if you don't play on that date. So I hope to play on opening night. I don't know if I will.

If Hyman isn't available to play for even 1 game at the beginning of next season, it'll be a significant blow to the Oilers roster depth next season, particularly on their weaker right wing.
Thankfully, the Oilers have some depth players ready to step into the lineup - but maybe not for long.
Insiders have hinted that Mattias Janmark could be placed on waivers and stashed in the AHL next season, but if Hyman is unavailable in the first week, that move could be delayed.
That may not be an advantage, as sneaking players through waivers a week into the regular season is generally harder than the first day. However, if someone claims Janmark, the Oilers may not sweat it.
Hopefully Hyman is fully healthy again for Game 1 of the regular season, but even if he isn't, the Oilers have the depth players to step up for a few games if needed.
