As the trade deadline starts to slow down a bit, is always awesome to look back on trades in the past that nearly came to fruition. Yesterday on TSN Radio, former NHLer Wayne Simmonds dropped a huge report that he was nearly dealt to the Edmonton Oilers in a one for one trade for Jordan Eberle.
The 1037 game veteran Simmonds explained that he was nearly dealt for Eberle near the beginning of his career when he was with the Flyers. Eberle was a fantastic player for the Oilers, but Wayne Simmonds in his prime days in Philly was a unicorn player in the league - a fantastic offensive threat and a feared physical player. Soon after that time, the Oilers traded Eberle to the New York Islanders for Ryan Strome.
It would've been wild to see this blockbuster one for one trade go down at the time, and now we can only think about what would be different if the move was made. It was tough for the Oilers to lose a fan favourite in Eberle, but Simmonds was an incredible player - and now the Oilers may have a reunion with Eberle this trade deadline anyway.
