Oilers defenceman Brett Kulak needs to make a difficult salary decision that will affect his future with the team in Edmonton.
Top Oilers insider Bob Stauffer reported yesterday that the team is looking to complete 5 contract extensions in the next month: for McDavid, Walman, Ekholm, Podkolzin, and Coach Knoblauch. For now, Brett Kulak is just under consideration.

While speaking on the expected contract extensions upcoming, Stauffer also mentioned that Brett Kulak will personally have to make a decision on his future with the Oilers.
I would say that Kulak will probably have a decision to make.
I'll have a pretty good idea by Wednesday - but I'm just thinking to myself: does he go to market after his performance in the playoffs, or does he stay here?

Kulak has mostly served on the Oilers 3rd defence pair on a relatively cheap contract of $2.75M. Last season, the Oilers trusted him in more situations, and the veteran played well with the extended opportunity - driving up his value in the market.

Now 31 years old, this is his big chance to get a big contract. With the rising salary cap, Kulak could likely demand a salary raise that the Oilers just can't accommodate on their third defence pair. Currently, the Oilers have just only $176K in cap space.
If the Stony Plain native wants to stay on with the Edmonton Oilers, he'll likely have to take a lower salary than he could get on the open market.
Hopefully he does stay on his hometown team with a chance to compete for the Cup, but he won't be faulted if he leaves to sign a contract that Edmonton can't afford.
