In a recent interview, former-Oiler Tyson Barrie spoke about when he knew the precise moment he would retire from his fourteen-year NHL career.
Tyson Barrie recalls fondly his final tour of NHL cities
"So I was trying to enjoy it [his final year with Calgary] as much as I could, you know," Tyson said, "hunting down my favourite spots and going for beers, you know, just doing everything I could to visit my friends on the road. It went quick still, ya, fourteen years went quick."
I suppose when you've done anything for that long, one has a tendency to take their career for granted. Yet, when Tyson Barrie realized it was time to hang-up the skates, he approached the game differently.
"I would say the last year I had in Calgary, when I was getting ruthlessly 'health-bombed', I was able to kind of see the writing was on the wall, that it was coming to an end fairly quickly."
Of course, Edmonton fans will remember Tyson Barrie for the three seasons he spent in an Oilers' jersey, where he recorded 132 points in 190 games played, and was a staple on the blueline before being traded to Nashville for
Mattias Ekholm.
Tyson Barrie announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday, August 25, 2025, following his final year with the Calgary Flames.
Barrie reflected on his decision to retire, as he said, in his last year with the Flames, which did not go as planned, after his injuries took their toll on his play. He began contemplating retirement during the summer, concluding that it 'felt like the natural next step and he didn't want to force continuing his career.'
Over his 14-year career, Tyson Barrie played 822 games and recorded 508 points. He was drafted in the 3rd-round of the 2009 entry draft by the Colorado Avalanche.
