The Edmonton Oilers had a fairly quiet first day of free agency, but still managed to set their roster up for next season - and now they're looking for some more cap space.
Evander Kane and
Viktor Arvidsson have both already been shipped to clear $9.125M from the Oilers' books, but if they're looking for a little more, another veteran will go.
Oilers insider hints another veteran player will be shipped out in coming move
On today's edition of OilersNow, insider Bob Stauffer hinted the team could find a mechanism to clear up cap space in the near future.
It's interesting to see Stauffer not mention a trade, but a mechanism to free up cap space. That would suggest a buyout could be under consideration, but the Oilers have no obvious candidates.
According to PuckPedia, the Edmonton Oilers only have $175.8K of cap space after July 1st. Freeing up cap space looks like a clear need for next year.
Who could the Edmonton Oilers be moving on from to create cap space?
If the Oilers are creating cap space, they'll have to be parting with a veteran above a league minimum deal.
Main candidates could be Mattias Janmark and
Brett Kulak, two of the few players who do not have full trade protection. Janmark is being paid $1.35M for a fourth line role the Oilers could replace for cheaper, and Kulak makes $2.75M while the Oilers have a surplus of left shot defenceman.
A trade for either player could make sense to free up cap space, but a buyout wouldn't at all.
Freeing up some salary cap space looks like a needed move for some in-season roster flexibility next year. However the Oilers choose to do it remains to be seen, but a move appears to be coming soon.
