Without much salary cap space, the Edmomton Oilers were surprisingly among one of the teams that made a pitch to sign Brock Boeser in free agency - meaning it had to be a unique contract.
The Edmonton Oilers ended up having a relatively quiet free agency, signing
Andrew Mangiapane to a great value contract as their only addition. Signing Boeser may have been a far riskier deal.
Edmonton Oilers reportedly tried to make pitch to sign Canucks winger Brock Boeser
According to multiple NHL insiders, the Oilers were among the top teams interested in signing Boeser. The Oilers' offers were contingent on how much salary cap space they could've offloaded before July 1, which turned out to be
Viktor Arvidsson and
Evander Kane.
The Oilers began free agency with just over $4M in cap space, so they would've needed to clear another contract to make a real offer to Boeser. The only real option would've been trading
Adam Henrique, who has a full no-move clause.
Oilers insiders had previously speculated the Oilers could've offered a long-term deal in the $6M range, or a short term at $7.5M.
Boeser even reportedly had some tough feelings about the Canucks organization, and was heavily considering joining the rival Oilers - perhaps on a discount.
Realistically, Boeser isn't the best fit for Edmonton as a pure sniper. The Oilers can add more impactful complementary players to their roster for far cheaper - especially after they harshly benched Jeff Skinner all year.
The Oilers are now right back up against the salary cap, and are likely done for major additions until next season.
