All eyes in the NHL are turning to Connor McDavid as the regular season nears without a contract extension in place.

Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov decided to quit waiting on McDavid to set the market and signed a historic $17M/year deal today. Now, everyone's wondering if McDavid will be taking more.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman addressed McDavid's salary demand after Kaprizov contract

Although Kaprizov set a new record of annual salary, Connor McDavid isn't looking to just take the most money. On the most recent edition of OilersNow, insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed McDavid will likely be paid less than Kaprizov.
«I think the number will be lower than people think, I believe it could be lower than 16. It wouldn't surprise me if it was lower than 16 I'm gonna say, I don't think it's gonna be long-term.

I think everybody is just waiting for McDavid to make his decision.»

The follow up question is: if the terms of the contract are essentially set and agreed upon, what's holding up McDavid from actually signing the deal?
Friedman continued to explain that McDavid is using this moment as leverage to remind the Oilers just how much winning matters to him. He's very likely going to stay in Edmonton, but he wants to see more from the GM to build this roster.
«To me, what this is all about is McDavid, he wants to win so bad. The two losses the last two years have bothered him so much that - we all know winning matters to him. I think this is his way of just making sure that the Oilers realize how much it matters to him.

With just 2 weeks left until the regular season begins and most of Oil Country starting to worry about McDavid, it's fair to say that his message has been delivered. The Oilers are on edge to keep pace with McDavid's demands.
The front office needs to keep doing their best to impress McDavid, and hopefully that'll draw him to re-sign before the season starts.
