The Edmonton Oilers are entering a must-win season, but their opening night lineup looks nowhere near complete.
Edmonton will be forced to rely upon some young players surpassing expectations this year up front, but there's still some issues if this lineup is going to go on another Cup run. Sensing the urgency, the Oilers front office may actually move quickly this year.
Edmonton Oilers reportedly see weaknesses at 3 positions entering this season
The Oilers coach sees the urgent need for a hot start this season too, and is beginning the year loading up McDavid and Draisaitl on the top line.
However, the outs stress on some weaknesses at other places in the lineup - and the major issue of goaltending has still not been addressed.
According to a
new report from Allan Mitchell of the Athletic, the Oilers are aware of these issues and will be pursuing solutions potentially trade market. Specifically, the GM is looking at goalie, a centreman, and a right winger.
The club does know that goaltending remains an issue, moving McDavid and Draisaitl to the same line weakens centre on the second and third lines and that Savoie is a better fit for the Draisaitl (second line) than a checking unit.
Most often, nothing happens. However, the Oilers have needs in specific and important areas, and there are some attractive trade options Bowman could send out for immediate help in goal, centre and on the wing.

If a trade solution does present itself early before rosters are finalized, the Oilers should take the opportunity to address any of these positions. This is a year they can't afford to wait around and be passive.
