The Minnesota Wild have officially re-signed Kirill Kaprizov to an 8 year contract at $17M per season, the biggest deal in NHL history.

Kaprizov has massively jumped over Leon Draisaitl who had the previous record AAV at $14M just last offseason, mostly due to the rapidly rising salary cap. However, there's one other Oilers who still could get paid more than Kaprizov.

Kirill Kaprizov signs biggest deal in NHL history with Minnesota Wild

According to official insider reports, the deal is officially completed to keep Kaprizov in Minnesota.
The 28 year old Russian forward only entered the NHL 5 years ago, but he immediately rose to star status. Though he was injured for half of last season,Kaprizov scored at a rate of 112 points last year - truly elite production.
The Minnesota Wild haven't had a player of his calibre in quite some time, if ever. They'll be thrilled to lock down Kirill for the next 8 years, and will now need to surround him with some decent rosters to actually make a playoff push.

What does Kaprizov contract mean for Connor McDavid?

Kaprizov did raise the bar with this new record setting deal, but there's a chance that Connor McDavid doesn't overtake him to be the highest paid player.
New reports suggest that McDavid is much more likely to take a short-term contract, with a significantly team friendly salary number to help the Oilers win.
It actually may be possible that McDavid is paid less than Kaprizov on his next contract because of term difference and McDavid's insistence on taking a lower salary.
While Kaprizov taking $17M would've definitely helped McDavid's case for the maximum at $19M, the Oilers captain isn't worried about setting records with his contract - he just wants to win the Stanley Cup.
