With the NHL regular season less than 10 days away, activity around potential trades and waiver-wire transactions are heating up; Insider Elliotte Friedman believes there may be interest from the Oilers to acquire a goaltender.
Possibility of goaltenders being available via trade or waivers
Michael DiPietro had a standout 2024-25 season with the Providence Bruins (Boston's AHL affiliate), earning recognition as the AHL's top goaltender.
Yet, despite DiPietro's strong play in the minors, the Boston Bruins' numbers 1 and 2 goal positions are already established with
Jeremy Swayman and
Joonas Korpisalo, leaving DiPietro somewhat unprotected moving forward.
In 2024-25, Michael posted a 26-8-4 record, and a strong 2.05 GAA and .927 SV% in 40 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins. Though he would not be competing for a number 1 and 2 goalie position, he could make a case as the Oilers' 3rd-string goalie.
He's on a one-way contract for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons, making him potentially vulnerable to waivers if the Capitals want to avoid losing him for nothing. This makes him a possible trade, or waiver wire target for other teams.
The Edmonton Oilers may be considering Washington Capitals goalie Clay Stevenson as a potential trade target, according to The Hockey News
.While Stevenson's 2024-25 AHL season with the Hershey Bears was not as strong as his previous year (18-8-5, 2.94 GAA, .888 SV% in 33 games), his 2023-24 campaign was impressive with a 2.06 GAA and .922 SV%, and a record of 24-10-2 in 36 games.
He also won a Calder Cup with the Bears in 2024. This suggests he has proven his ability at the AHL level, and could be ready for the NHL as a 3rd-string goalie.
