As the Edmonton Oilers continue to make roster cuts, four players in particular have survived late into the preseason and made a case for a bottom-6 role.

Marginal players catching coach's attention in Oilers' preseason games

With winger Zach Hyman out because of injury, the Oilers are in a next-man-up attitude at the wing. This opens up opportunities for players like Quinn Hutson to secure a roster spot.
Quinn Hutson has been consistently impressive in training camp and preseason games, showing a knack for finding scoring opportunities and making plays, according to Oilers Nation, generating chances on the power play and showcasing his offensive instincts.
On defense, fresh off a record-setting season in Finland's Liiga, Atro Leppänen has also been making a strong impression during the 2025 preseason and has the potential to make the NHL roster.
Oilers' head coach Kris Knoblauch has praised Leppanen's ability to move the puck in preseason games; his crisp passing ability to star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will serve him well when deciding his role with the team.
Though Jake Walman's injury is listed as day-to-day, having a depth-defenseman like Atro on the roster could prove valuable deeper into the season, or during the playoffs.
Noah Philp's chances of making the Edmonton Oilers opening night roster in a bottrom-6 this preseason are considered good, with several sources suggesting he has earned a spot, or is making a strong case for it.
Of course, the Oilers' decisions regarding their forward depth and the performance of other marginal players during the remainder of the preseason will be crucial factors, given the limited roster-spots up for grabs.
Finally, Alec Regula, a 6'4" right-shot defenseman claimed off waivers in December 2024, missed the 2024-25 season due to a knee injury, but has impressed during the current preseason. Sources indicate he has shown potential and could push for a bottom-4 spot on the blueline.
It's unlikely all of the above named players will dress on opening-night against the Calgary Flames, even if they have shown they can compete against preseason NHL rosters. Be prepared to see them throughout the regular season as potential call-ups.
