Oilers provide update on Jake Walman injury, place new goalie on waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have addressed the expected return timelines for Jake Walman and Vasily Podkolzin, and placed goalie Matt Tomkins on waivers.
Walman sustained an injury earlier in preseason that went unnoticed by fans during a game, but has kept him out of action for the last few games. Thankfully, it doesn't sound like a bad injury.

Speaking to the media at practice today, Coach Knoblauch revealed that Walman is hoping to play the final preseason game of the year - but may not be ready until opening night on October 8th.
In addition, Vasily Podkolzin will resume skating with the team in a few days, and is expected to return to play in the Oilers' final preseason game. Podkolzin was on a personal leave of absence after the passing of his father.
It's great news for the Oilers to get both players back and ready to go for the first game of the regular season. With only 2 games left in the preseason now, the Oilers will be trying their best to stay healthy.
Oilers place goaltender Matt Tomkins on waivers
The Oilers also announced another roster cut today, placing goaltender Matt Tomkins on waivers for assignment to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
Edmonton signed the 31 year old Tomkins in free agency this offseason, likely with the goal of him being the team's AHL starter and organization's 3rd goaltender.
A former 7th round draft pick of the Blackhawks in 2012, Tomkins has only played 6 NHL games - but has plenty of minor league experience. In 26 AHL games last year, Tomkins posted a .907 save percentage.
Hopefully the Oilers get all of their lineup sorted and fully healthy for October 8th, the beginning of a massively important season.
