Top NHL insider confirms Oilers are shopping defender in trade talks

Top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that the Edmonton Oilers are shopping defenceman Troy Stecher in trade talks.
As the Oilers see a number of injured players return to their roster, they'll need to make some tough decisions to get under the salary cap. Some players may be waived or traded, with Stecher appearing to be most likely.

On last night's edition of Saturday's Headlines, Friedman confirmed that the Oilers are looking for a «soft landing» for Stecher. Perhaps that means trading him to a team of his choice, either a good personal fit or a contender with a need for him.
One of the names that's definitely going around there is Troy Stecher, and Stecher's not playing tonight. He's one of their extra D, and they have a couple extra right now.

The 31 year old Stecher has performed admirably when called upon by the Edmonton Oilers. He played 66 games last season with solid results, and was also called into 8 playoff games - opportunities he earned over Ty Emberson.
However, things changed at Oilers training camp this year. Both Alec Regula and Ty Emberson have taken a step forward and look to be ready to take the 6th and 7th defenceman roles.
It'd be tough to see Stecher go after quality contributions from the team on a cheap contract of $788K, but it makes the most sense to move him out.
The Oilers could potentially get a draft pick in return for Stecher which could be flipped for another asset at the trade deadline. Hopefully the Oilers can do right by Stecher to get a fresh opportunity, and an asset as well.
