The pressure was on
Stuart Skinner tonight to keep the team in the game with no option for
Calvin Pickard to come in - and he did that until the whole team fell apart in the third.
Stuart Skinner addresses two controversial goals, blames himself and referees
In his post game media comments, Skinner mostly pointed toward the penalty kill as an area to improve, the referees in one situation, and also took the blame for a goal.
First off, Skinner admitted that he needed to fight through screens better on
Miro Heiskanen's goal, and that he was outworked by Stars skaters in the slot.
I think tonight, the east-west stuff kind of got us in trouble. The goal from the point, I should have looked in the right side a little bit quicker. Obviously I didn't, and it's a goal.

Additionally, on Duchene's all-important tying goal, Skinner explained that he felt contact from the Stars forward that impeded him from making a save, and he gestured towards the referees and Coach Knoblauch for a challenge.
I just felt some contact when I got to the point, so it was hard for me to shift to my left. Obviously the pass happened and I had to go into desperation, because I felt like I got interfered there.

Skinner may have had a point there, but ultimately the Oilers must have felt there wasn't enough evidence to warrant a challenge, and risk a penalty called against them.
Stuart Skinner still needs to find consistency in playoffs
So far through the playoffs, Skinner has been the same as he's been all year: either near perfect, or far below average.
In these playoffs, Stuart Skinner has either had a SV% less than 0.834 or a shutout. No games in-between.

Stuart Skinner was far from the reason the Oilers lost tonight's game, but he failed to make an extra save or two to keep them in the game.
Tonight's .815 save percentage and -1.99 GSAx simply isn't good enough from Skinner again. By his own admission, there are things he needs to work on to be back better.
Along with Skinner, the entire Oilers team is going to need to be much better than their third period effort to get a split in Game 2. The playoffs require a full 60 minutes each game, and tonight, the Oilers simply unravelled at the seams in the third.
