TSN recently posted their projected Team Canada lineup for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and though the roster included Zack Hyman, it did have one glaring omission on defense.
As was the case in the 4 Nations Cup, Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard was overlooked when TSN revealed their mock Team Canada lineup, listing the eight defenseman they believe should represent Canada at the next Winter Olympics in Italy.
Evan Bouchard's omission did raise some eyebrows, as many analysts believe the Oilers rearguard should be an obvious choice for Hockey Canada, given the young d-man's regular season and playoff performances, in particular the two consecutive runs to the Stanley Cup Finals, where his production was instrumental to the Oilers success.
"I know everybody has their own opinions and everything," TSN Director of Scouting, Craig Button said on a recent show. "But Evan Bouchard, when you consider what he does when it matters the most, he is that good."
Analyst Jeff O'neill also believes Evan Bouchard should be included on Team Canada. "If you're talking about the games being critical," O'Neill said, "what do you think two marches to the Stanley Cup Finals are? Where everything is overtime and this guy's on the ice contributing?"
Yet, not all share that same opinion, believing it's not yet Evan Bouchard's time. TSN panelists Frankie Corrado and Cheryl Pound said Bouchard could be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"What is your trust factor in a tourney like that, when one turnover can be the difference," Corrado commented. "He's just too prone to moments like that."
Though Evan Bouchard's proclivity to make defensive mistakes is a concern, his proven play in crucial games, and his ability to make the right offensive play in a game-changing shift, makes up for any of his mistakes. On a Team Canada stacked with offensive skill, getting the puck to the forwards, in particular Connor McDavid, makes all the difference.
Whether Evan Bouchard will replace one of Colton Parayko, Drew Doughty, or Mackenzie Weegar on right-side defense will be revealed closer to December, when Hockey Canada will have made their final selections.
For the Oilers, having three players (Bouchard, Hyman and McDavid) skating for the Red and White will be a matter of honor, and a testimony to some of the team's core talent. Playing in the Winter Olympics in Italy will only serve to bolster their experience for when the time comes that they are once again competing for Lord Stanley's Cup.
