The Oilers trade for forward Trent Frederic hasn't panned out well so far, but judging by his most recent comments, he fully intends on staying with Edmonton as a free agent.
Oilers forward Trent Frederic says he loves Edmonton before hitting free agency
This playoff run will be significant for Frederic, who is slated to become a free agent this coming offseason. With a good postseason, he could raise his salary for next year.
When asked about playing his first playoff game in Edmonton during Game 3, Frederic mentioned the rabid fans were like hockey heaven.
It's pretty hard to get a taste of heaven and leave, so this comment heavily suggests how impressed he is with the city and his willingness to stay as a free agent.
Adam Henrique had a very similar experience after joining the team last year.
With a rising salary cap, it's very possible that another NHL team will be able to outbid the Oilers to sign Trent Frederic. He'll have to consider the possible success in Edmonton as a huge factor for his decision. Oilers insider Jason Gregor believes Frederic could get up to $4M in free agency.
Some team may be willing to pay me $4M. And Edmonton's only gonna pay 3.5. But if I play 3 years in Edmonton, and I'll have an opportunity to play with Draisaitl and McDavid if I play well, I'm not getting that opportunity [elsewhere].
- Jason Gregor
Frederic is quickly beginning to skate a little better as he fights through his high ankle sprain. Hopefully the Oilers can extend their playoff run long enough that he fully finds his game, and can become a real factor into the team's success.
