Spector was saying the Leon Draisaitl isn't thought of as a 50 goal scorer yet because he hasn't had multiple 50 goal seasons yet. Not only is Spector's math wrong (scoring 50 goals by definition makes a player a 50 goal scorer), but he's also just completely incorrect. Draisaitl has scored 50 goals or more three times.
It's such a strange way to diminish the accomplishments and status of a player who is arguably the second best in the NHL - and it's not too much to ask for a reporter to know Draisaitl's career totals. By every way you want to define it, Draisaitl is a 50 goal scorer and one of the most prolific scorers in the NHL.
On the other hand, fans have brought up the fact that Spector routinely calls Evander Kane a bona-fide 30 goal scorer. Kane has only scored exactly 30 goals once in his career. Apparently Kane is a 30 goal scorer, but Draisaitl isn't a 50 goal scorer.
It's this kind of bizarre criticism that reached the Oilers and causes a sometimes rocky relationship between the players and the media. It's entirely different for fans, who can pretty much tune out the reporter if they know more about hockey. Oilers fans took to social media to dunk on Spector for the misinformed take.
With all of that said, Draisaitl is on pace to have one of the best years of his career so far, and has been arguably the Oilers best player so far this year. Draisaitl's well on his way to his fourth 50 goal season, which will make Spector look silly again.
