Oilers locker room ready to deal with questions on McDavid contract
Connor McDavid himself isn't afraid of the distraction of entering the year without a contract, and he thinks his teammates should be the same. The Captain even went as far to say if it was a distraction to anyone, they don't belong in the NHL.
McDavid's contract situation may even be affecting other teammates' negotiations, but everyone understands the team's top priority.
Mattias Ekholm revealed that he'd like to re-sign with the Oilers, but understands the team is focused their efforts on McDavid at the moment. It's a slight delay personally for Ekholm, but he's not bothered - he wants to see McDavid stay too.
Obviously, every Oilers player wants to see the captain re-sign and lock in for future Stanley Cup runs. Leon Draisaitl probably has the most vested interested signed for the next 8 years, and he wants to see his best friend stay with the team. Still, even Draisaitl doesn't want to pressure McDavid.
Everyone in the organization from his teammates to management is giving McDavid all the space he needs to feel comfortable with the Oilers. Everyone in Edmonton hopes it will just be a matter of time before he signs a new deal.
