The Edmonton Oilers continue to evaluate their goaltending and TSN insider Chris Johnston has linked unrestricted free agent goaltender Jake Allen to the Oilers.
The discussion around the Oilers goaltending situation continues to grow louder as many pundits and fans feel that the team needs to do a major upgrade after losing game six in the Stanley Cup finals.
Jake Allen accustomed to the Western Conference
Allen Has had strong links to the Western Conference as he had spent several years with the St Louis Blues.
The 34-year-old netminder was drafted by Saint Louis in 2008, in the second round 34th overall.
Standing at 6 foot 2 and 197 lbs he has played for three NHL teams including the Blues, Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils.
He has just completed a two-year deal worth $7.7 million and holding a cap hit of 3.85 million which is a fair price for a goaltender of his caliber and his age.
Adding him to the Oilers would give them stability in net and a veteran presence as the team debates on the idea of breaking up their tandem of
Stuart Skinner and
Calvin Pickard.
The Oilers goaltending is locked for another season but combined they're only a little over $3,000,000 in salary.
This past season he had played 31 games with the devils, holding the goals against of 2.66 and a save percentage of .908 While holding a record of 13-16-1.
Oilers preparing for July 1st for onslaught
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman spoke in a press conference yesterday explaining that he is continuing to evaluate his goaltending.
Despite feeling that it's not as urgent considering he has two goalies signed for next year, many feel that this upgrade is necessary especially if it comes down to Oilers superstar
Connor McDavid retaining long term with the Oilers.
The Oilers lost their chance of trading for a new goaltender as
John Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks was moved to the Detroit Red Wings for
Petr Mrazek and two draft choices.
The fun begins on July 1st, and it remains to be seen on how the Oilers will help their cause, but goaltending is certainly on many people's minds.
