The Edmonton Oilers have some major contract extensions to get done this summer, beginning with Connor McDavid, but the Oilers captain may be looking for two new teammates to get signed too.
Oilers insider suggests teammates want Jake Walman and Vasily Podkolzin to be re-signed this summer
According to a new update from Oilers insider Bob Stauffer on OilersNow, Walman and Podkolzin could be up for contract extensions this offseason, and there's a suggestion that players on the team would like to see them return specifically.
There's two players that Stan Bowman went out and got. Vasily Podkolzin for a fourth-round pick, and the other one was Jake Walman for the first-round pick.
I think it's entirely possible at some point here in late July or in August, we could foresee a scenario where those guys' extensions get done. I think there is an appreciation for the uniqueness of their talents.
- Bob Stauffer
When Stauffer speaks about the appreciation for Walman and Podkolzin's talents, it seems clear that comes from the Oilers stars.
Leon Draisaitl played alongside Vasily Podkolzin for most of the season and raved about the young Russian's cerebral game and incredible work ethic. Both McDavid and Draisaitl also probably love Walman's slick breakout passing.
Given how well these players fit with Edmonton last season, it would be wise to re-sign them now instead of next offseason. Jake Walman will likely see a career high in points after a full year with the Oilers, and Podkolzin is still just 24 years old - he could perhaps have a breakout year too.
Hopefully Stauffer is correct, and the Oilers will be able to get Walman and Podkolzin signed to extensions before training camp opens.
