The Oilers' AHL affiliate has recently signed Luke Prokop, a 23 year old defenceman Edmonton native who will be among potential call-ups for the NHL this season.

Prokop is also the first openly gay player to be signed to an NHL contract, so he would be making history if he were called up to play for the Oilers this season. If he is called up, he'll need a new NHL deal from Edmonton.

Oilers analyst identifies Luke Prokop as call-up candidate for Edmonton this season

According to a recent piece from Oilers analyst Kurt Leavins, Prokop is in fact one of the potential call ups for the team this year despite not yet having an NHL contract. However, he does play a significant position of need as a right-shot defenceman.
Prokop has been stuck in the AHL in Nashville's system but he has got some game. Of the four guys inked, Prokop is the guy who I could see getting an NHL shot if injuries strike the big club. Strong signing. Now it's your move, Luke.

Prokop had stalled out with the Predators AHL team after being a 3rd round draft pick in 2020. He only played in 31 games last season in a depth role.
One criticism of his game has been a lack of physical play despite his massive frame, but Prokop recently told Bob Stauffer that's something he's looking to change this season with the Condors. If Prokop can make use of the assets that made him a good prospect and add some physicality, he'll earn a look in the NHL.
The Oilers right-side of defence is undoubtedly their weakest with mostly depth players beyond Evan Bouchard. If injuries strike, and Prokop impresses, he could be signed to the Oilers roster.
Calling up Prokop would also make NHL history as being the first openly gay player in the league. Playing for his hometown team too, it'd be a great accomplishment.
