Every offseason NHL teams extend professional tryout offers to players they believe could fill bottom roster-roles, players that are either undrafted, or remain marginal free agents, who could still add value to a lineup.
Regarding the Edmonton Oilers, several reports are circulating that list some of the players that could receive a PTO, beginning with Victor Olofsson.
The 30-year old left winger played in Vegas last year, scoring 15G and 14A, while skating 14:30 TOI over 56 games played. In 2021-22, then with Buffalo, Victor recorded 49 points, and 40 points in 2022-23. He has the ability to produce in a bottom-6 role.
His cap hit last year with Vegas was $1.075M, though he could be signed for the league minimum of $775K, according to Benchrates.
Luke Kunin is also a PTO candidate. The 28 year-old was drafted 15th overall by Minnesota in 2016. Over his career, the natural center scored 73G and 69A over 434 games played, and was San Jose's King Clancy Award candidate for both 2023 and 2024.
Luke was traded to Columbus 63 games into the 2024-25 season, and remains unsigned. His last cap hit was $2.75M with the Sharks.
Another center worthy of a PTO is 29-year old Robby Fabbri, who was drafted 21st overall by the Blues in 2014, and with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2018-19. His playoff experience could be valuable to an Oilers team expected to advance to the Finals next season.
In 30 career playoff games played, Fabbri recorded 16 points. In a depth role, he would certainly add value to an Oilers lineup already offensively-gifted.
Finally,
Michael Carcone is the final candidate for a PTO with Edmonton. Though he is on the smallish side at 5'9" and 182lbs, Carcone has the ability to find the net. In 2023, he was the AHL's top scorer, and won the
John Sollenberger Trophy as a result.
Each of these players could have the opportunity to impress Oilers' head coach Kris Knoblacuh, should they receive a PTO. They all have solid NHL experience, and in their own ways, have found relative-success playing at a top-level.
