Despite the Oilers' recent defensive struggles, Ty Emberson has made a strong case to remain in the lineup.

D-man's strong showing against Utah result of consistency

The goal he scored against the Mammoth was the result of Emberson's strong defensive play of late, and his willingness to join the play at the right time.
When he was acquired from the San Jose Sharks, expectations around Ty Emberson were somewhat subdued. Yet, his recent play has been solid and now seems to be challenging for more ice-time and responsibility.
According to Hockey Viz, Emberson supplies strong defence at a 3% rate above league average, while his overall contributions have him as a high-end third-pairing defenceman, with a strong ability to be higher-up in the depth chart.
Brett Kulak and Ty Emberson have been a solid pairing, out-scoring the opposition 7 to 3, while controlling over 50% of the shots and expected goals. A percentage above 50 means the team is expected to outscore opponents when they are on the ice, and they have, in fact, done that.
When Emberson is on the ice, the Oilers' xGS is 55%, and its actual goal share is 70%. He has contributed in a big way to the team's offense, despite his stay-at-home style of play.
At 25 years old, however, there's still room to grow for Emberson. He enters the first year of a two-year extension that carries a $1.3M AAV.
Emberson has also leapt over Troy Stecher and Alec Regula on the depth chart. It will be up to Ty to lock down a spot if he wants to play every night. As of now, he has done just that.
