In a recent episode of B/R Open Ice, analyst Frank Seravalli provided encouraging updates about the contract-extension talks for both Connor McDavid and Jake Walman.

Yes, I think meetings are going on between McDavid and Edmonton's brass, although they haven't got to talking numbers, and they don't seem incredibly motivated to do so yet.

The period before the first game of the 2025-26 season will indeed be significant, whether McDavid finally does sign, and also if he doesn't and begins the campaign a pending free agent. The latter scenario will have greater repercussions for the Oilers, of course, raising a level of uncertainty the Oilers can do without.
Also, there was some encouraging news about pending free-agent defenseman Jake Walman, whose extension talks are also moving along with the team and agent.

Given jake Walman's value to the Oilers at present, a long-term deal makes the most sense, I think. He is 29-years old and in the prime of his career, not to mention that top-4 defensemen that can also play the right-sider are a commodity in the NHL.
His 10 playoff points in 22 games, and steady play on the blueline, were a big reason why the Oilers advanced to its second-consecutive Finals.
