Oilers' Vasily Podkolzin taking leave of absence after heartbreaking news

The Edmonton Oilers have announced forward Vasily Podkolzin will be taking a leave of absence after the passing of his father, Alexander Podkolzin.

The tragic news arrives just one day after Podkolzin signed a 3-year contract extension with the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers organization released a statement explaining that Podkolzin will be heading home to Russia to be with his family and mourn the loss of his father.
The Edmonton Oilers are saddened to share that Vasily Podkolzin's father Alexander tragically and suddenly passed away last night.

The forward will be taking a leave of absence to return to Russia and be with his family. The Oilers extend heartfelt condolences to Podkolzin and his family during this difficult time.
Podkolzin will miss some time in preseason games, and there's no expected date for him to return to the team. The Oilers will extend all the space he needs.
The Oilers locker room have recently shown their appreciation for what Podkolzin brings to their team on and off the ice. Leon Draisaitl has raved about the young Russian as his linemate, and the entire team took a moment to celebrate his extension yesterday.
Podkolzin will be greatly missed for any amount of time he's gone, but fully supportive of him taking as much time away as needed - and supporting him when he returns, too.
