It was reported by Oilers' GM Stan Bowman that Andrew Mangiapane had a larger offer from the Leafs, but that he ultimately took less to play for the Edmonton Oilers.

While it is true that some players enjoy, and even thrive, playing under the intense scrutiny that comes with the Leafs' market, others prefer to just play hockey and leave all the extraneous noise behind.
"[Andrew] Mangiapane is a Toronto Kid, last I heard he was maybe a little concerned about playing in this market as a local," Nick Kypreos was reported saying on Sportsnet 590 The Fan. "It's not for everyone."

It is now clear that money was not the primary factor in Mangiapane's signing with the Oilers, who chose to play on a team in which he had the best chance of winning next season, one with which he had some past familiarity.
"It's gonna be fun to participate in the Battle of Alberta again. I think this was just a great fit for me. Edmonton has a great team."

And it helps when the teams' top players endorse your addition to team, superstars with whom Mangiapane will likely be playing. According to Stauffer of Oilers Now, both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid had called Andrew Mangiapane to court him to Edmonton.
The 29 year-old's skillset will undoubtedly help his new team, as he brings an element to the Oilers that has been missing in recent years, the kind of grit and relentless checking that has, in fact, helped the Florida Panthers build a championship team, and dare I say, Dynasty?
Andrew Mangiapane signed a two-year deal with Edmonton, with a $3.6M AAV, a very reasonable number for what he offers his new team, and 50% better than what Brock Boeser brings to Vancouver at twice the price.
While Andrew was hesitant to sign with Toronto due to concerns about the intense pressure and high-profile nature of being a Toronto kid, he is equally excited to bring his style of game to a team that is on the brink of winning, and whose game may just be the difference maker next season.
"That's always been a part of my game," Mangiapane said post-signing. "Being tenacious, hardworking, forechecking, trying to get in there and start things. It help out my game being more involved."

It is the kind of successful game that Florida's Brad Marchand plays, at which he excels, in fact; the kind of game that Mangiapane will bring to the Oilers roster. And should the Oilers meet the Panthers again in next season's playoffs, it just might be Mangiapane that gets under Brad Marchand's skin, and gives Florida a taste of their own medicine.
